CO Detectors Now a Requirement – Effective 2/22/2010
Carbon monoxide detectors are now mandatory in most homes in New York State. A new law goes into effect today requiring the devices in any residential building which has a carbon monoxide producing appliance like a gas furnace, stove or hot water heater and any home with an attached garage. Homes with only electric furnaces and stoves do not need the monitors. Local municipalities will enforce the new policy and fines range from town to town. It’s been dubbed Amanda’s law, in memory of a Western New York girl who died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
Important Information Regarding Swimming Pools
As of January 1, 2008, the Property Maintenance Code of New York State was changed to require that all existing swimming pool enclosures meet the updated enclosure regulations. FIRST RESPONDERS CANNOT FIND YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT AN ADDRESS NUMERAL
Code Section: Fire Code of NYS Section 505.1 and PMC 304.3 requires the following:
- 1. New and existing buildings shall have approved address numerals.
- 2. The numbers shall contrast the background.
- 3. The Arabic numbers shall be a minimum of 4 inches in height with a stroke of 0.5 inches.
